1.2 teams are pitted against each other. Each has 6 players and a goalie.
2.Team with more no. of goals after 2 halves of 30 minutes each, win.
3.Physical contact is allowed but only when defender is completely infront of the attacker.
4.Unlimited no. of fouls are allowed and game resumes after the foul.
5.A player is allowed . . . -To run with the ball for 3 steps -To hold the ball for 3 seconds -Unlimited dribble with 3 steps allowed before and after dribbling (no double-dribble).
6.It is illegal to keep the ball in a team's possession without making a recognizable attempt to attack and to try to score
I hail from Sarnath. I used to play Hockey till 10th standard, but was introduced to the football world during my pre IIT-JEE days in Kota.
My mentor was a senior from Delhi who was a very good footballer himself. I used to get together with him and his friends and play football during the wee hours of the day, usually between 1 pm to 3 pm.
In IT-BHU, I’veplayed in the AdelMemorial Inter HostelFootball Tournament in which I received the best 1st year footballer title. I also represented IT in IIT Kanpur’s Udghosh, in which I played as a midfielder in both football and hockey.
I’m a big fan of Steven Gerrard, mainly because of his dedication to the team and I sincerely try to imbibe this in my traits.
My role models in IT are Baljit Bhaiya, Sandeep Bhaiya and Dharmendra Bhaiya whose timely guidance and inspirational talks will go a long way in improving my game. I am a little ambitious and my wildest dream would be to play next to Rooney.
“There are more adventures on a chessboard than on all the seas of the world”, as goes a great saying. The last week witnessed a mind boggling chess event organised by the IT-BHU chess team at the Rajputana common room, attracting overwhelming response. Not only there was an enthusiastic participation from the first-yearites, seniors too didn’t lag behind. There was a display of impeccable strategies and methods to captivate the participants and audience alike. Most of the games were close and few had unbelievable turnarounds. Amidst the competition well known aggressiveness of an ITians was evident.
An exciting knock-out round full of complicated combinations and sequences of tactical maneuvers led to the selection of the 20 best brains. This was followed by the second phase of battles where each player had to play 4 matches. It saw some good fighting spirit and the players never went for quick draws and delivered quite a few eye openers. On the basis of the second round the rankings were decided. The first position was grabbed by the very deserving, captain of the chess team, Saurabh Verma from 3rd year electronics along with the first year chess tournament winner Himanshu Tal. Second position went to Shubham Gupta, the vice captain, followed by Venkatesh and Rahul Singla.
Well thats not all!!! Its just the starting, the main event is yet to come. With the mind blowing response in just the preliminary round there's much more to watch out for at the mega showdown, SPARDHA '09, where players will attack with all the vigor, and kings would be in the open with mating threats hanging in the air. “The Perfect Game”, as they say, ‘Team Handball’ is Rugby, Basketball and Soccer all amalgamated into one. It is considered the 2nd fastest game in the world after Ice Hockey. This year IT BHU is going to be witness to this amazingly entertaining sport for the 1st time in SPARDHA ’09. The rules are simple, equipment is minimal and the thrill incredible. The inter hostel tournament will also be organized before it.
The whole idea is the brainchild of Dr. Swasti S. Mondal of Mechanical Dept. Since it’s the 1st time, a lot of ground work has been done. When the sport's finest athletes finally descend onto the court in Spardha’s maiden event, handball will turn out to be the ultimate contest of skill, strength, and strategy. Anuj Madaan, captain of the team is a national level player and is working tirelessly under the able guidance of Mondal sir to make the tournament a grand success. We have some more accomplished players within our ranks like Arjun Lal and Pramil Jain. The field has almost been prepared and regular practice has begun.
Sparks will fly and endurance will be tested as hostel teams outthink and outmaneuver each other in their quest for victory. Overall it is gonna be a new experience for sports enthusiasts of IT. It is urged, especially from the 1st yearites, take part in the event or come to cheer for your team. Be there…
In the 2nd part of our regular column ‘HAPPY DAYS’ we are going to flashbacks in the life of Ankit Singhai, from Mechanical Dept., batch of ’07. He was the captain of IT cricket team and an inspirational bowler.
Excerpts from a telephonic interview- About his present job and place I am presently working in Maruti Suzuki, Gurgaon.
Regarding his involvement in sports other than cricket I was an enthusiastic footballer too and regularly participated in inter-hostel Adel memorial. About making a balance between studies and cricket Well, it’s all about commitment of the individual. If you are dedicated to the game you will easily find time for both.
On his accomplishments In the 2nd year I was adjudged the best bowler in Spardha for taking 12 wickets in 3 matches. I was also chosen to represent the university but couldn’t do so because of the semester exams. In the 4th year IT BHU cricket team reached the finals of the IIT Kanpur sports fest-Udghosh under my captaincy. I played an instrumental role in getting the wall around the cricket ground built.
On changes in the sports culture during the four years When I was in the first year the cricket team was flooded with senior players(mostly from the 3rd and the 4th year)but as time passed by more and more 1st and 2nd yearites started getting into the team and the standard of cricket went up notches. In 1st year, I remember, the crowd gathered in huge numbers and the numbers rapidly shrank in the following years.
On his current participation in sports Yes, I play for my company’s team.
On his happiest moment When I took 5 wickets in 3 overs in Spardha semifinal in 2nd year. Also, when I contributed significantly in my team’s victory in two consecutive matches in Kanpur.
Message Keep the spirits high and try to participate actively.
Q: Could you tell us your achievements in and before you joined IT?
R: In school I was decorated as the Best District Player in Ajmer. I was also selected to play for the Nationals twice. After coming to IT, my hostel team in IT has won the Adel Memorial Cup three times in a row. More importantly we have clinched Silver at Spardha ’06 and Gold at Spardha ’07.
Q: What have you gained from playing football for IT?
R: Temperament. But I must add that I play football purely out of passion. I simply love playing the game.
Q: Do you intend to continue playing in the future?
R: Unlikely. I have decided to pursue my MS from the United States. It remains to be seen if I can give football the time and energy it deserves.
Q: Who in your opinion will take your place in the IT team once you graduate?
R: Deepak Singh, from 4th year MNC. He’s an excellent player with great finishing abilities

Q: Tell us something interesting about yourself that very few people know.
R: I wish you had given me this questionnaire earlier so I could think about my replies beforehand. Jokes apart, many people don’t know that my physique till class 5th was such that I couldn’t play football
.
Q: What are your expectations from Spardha ’09?
R: Since we couldn’t get gold last year, I’d like to remedy that by grabbing 1st place this year.
Q: What is your most memorable moment in your career at IT?
R: The semi-finals at Udghosh ’06. We lost, but we played a fantastic match. That match, I will never forget.
Q: Anything you’d like to say to the IT Junta?
R: Yeah, I’d like you to come and watch all or matches, we need your support. Also I’d like to tell my juniors to practice hard and show more commitment. Playing for IT is a privilege you shouldn’t take lightly.
This is not for The faint hearted, The wannabe's, The faker's and The I'm Cool's. Gone are the days of shaking hips, exploding ramp and talent showcasing.....MIND IT, this is not for the born talents, who sing and dance on the tourney to fame. Here, fame is hard earned. The journey is full of arduous tasks and unexpected challenges and if you've already accepted defeat and are thinking of giving it a quit, better send your enemies....we shall do the dirty things on your behalf.....

The single largest body in IT-BHU, the IT-Gymkhana is a functionary of all co-curricular and extracurricular activities in IT. A hoard of changes have taken place in the sports facilities in IT in the last couple of years and all credit goes to the Gymkhana. During this period some new grounds have been constructed and the provision of the flood lights in some grounds have made them accessible in the night too. The Gym has also been refurbished. Some badminton and volleyball courts have also been built, courtesy of which, you can see shuttles rambling at the Gymkhana ground in the evening. Recently a handball court has also been prepared.
Despite all these efforts, some girls are still not satisfied, because the time restriction in their hostel does not allow them to take full advantage of these facilities. But still, we can say that the Gymkhana is breaking the moulds and stretching up all its limits to benefit the students’ body as much as possible. Now it is on the students to take the best advantage of these facilities because Malviyaji’s dream of overall development of the students could not be fulfilled without students’ cooperation.Ponder over it when you pass by a sports field next time...
